Netflix Seeks Formula One Broadcasting Rights
Streaming giant Netflix is reportedly pursuing the broadcasting rights for Formula One races in the United States, aiming to start its coverage with the 2026 season. This move comes after the massive success of Netflix’s documentary series Drive to Survive, which has been credited with significantly boosting Formula One’s popularity, particularly among younger audiences in the U.S.
Netflix’s expansion into live sports marks a strategic shift from its traditional on-demand content model. If successful, this will be its first foray into broadcasting live events, potentially setting a precedent for future ventures in the sports world.
Currently, ESPN holds the U.S. broadcasting rights for Formula One under a £72 million deal. However, the network’s exclusivity period for renegotiating a new contract has expired, opening the door for other bidders, including Netflix and possibly other streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime and Apple TV+.
